Starting from today, Estonian citizens younger than 18 can apply for the electronic identity solution Smart-ID, which was created by SK ID Solutions. To use the service, they need approval from a parent.

Starting from July 11, Smart-ID can be applied for by Estonians under the age of 18. If an underage child wishes to use Smart-ID, they must also present approval from a parent when applying for the service. The child will be given a link during the application process where their parent can confirm the child’s application with their digital signature (Mobile-ID or ID-Card is required for this). Similar to the adults, Estonian children under 18 can currently only apply for Smart-ID electronically by using their ID-Card or Mobile-ID.

The number of Smart-ID users has been steadily increasing every day and now, the app has surpassed the milestone of 300 000 unique users in the Baltics. In Estonia, there are 60 000 Smart-ID users but in Latvia, nearly 160 000 people have started using the authentication solution and in Lithuania, 82 000 people. On average, 65 000 people use Smart-ID in a day.

The innovative and convenient Smart-ID works on a simple principle: the user downloads the Smart-ID app from Google Play or App Store to his smart device and identifies himself by ID-card or bank code card. As with the ID-card, Smart-ID also requires the use of PIN1 and PIN2 codes which the user will create within the same app. Using Smart-ID is free of charge and user data is completely secure.
